Cities to visit on holiday in Granada

The bus system in Granada is easy to use and very cheap. All buses leave from St George’s near the fish market and the friendly drivers will make sure you board the right bus for your destination. You will travel with the sound of reggae or soca coming out of the speakers. Alternatively, you may prefer to rent a car or jeep for a few days so that you can explore the green valleys and waterfalls in addition to these villages.

Gouyave
This town was originally known as ‘Charlotte Town’, but when the French ruled the island they changed the name out of respect for the many guava trees in the area. Every Friday night, the city hosts ‘Fish Friday’, when you can sample locally caught fish from dishes created by street vendors. The fish is grilled, steamed or fried to perfection. The people of Gouyave love seafood and know about it. Don’t miss out on this culinary event if you do too. Try everything and be adventurous to get the best out of the experience. The event starts at 6:00 pm every week.

Jumpers (pronounced ‘So-ters’)
This quiet town is located in the north of the island. It has a long stretch of sandy beach that overlooks Carriacou and the Grenadines. Away from the crowded areas of the south, this picturesque city has an interesting history. It is the place where the last Caribs of Grenada are said to have jumped from ‘Carib’s Leap’ or ‘Sauteurs Leap’. They were trying to escape from the French, so they jumped off the 40-foot cliff to their deaths. In 1664 the Dominican Fathers erected a grotto so that the Caribs would have a place for their souls. There is still a wooden deck in place today.

Grenville
Many visitors who enjoy their vacations in Grenada will find Grenville on the west coast. The town is located in the middle of the coast and is the center of the agricultural export industry. It is also the second largest city on the island after St George’s. The town is home to the largest nutmeg processing plant on the island and has local shops and restaurants to explore.

Saint George
The capital of Granada is bustling and bustling hub of activity. The city is part of the Eastern Caribbean route for cruise ships and will often be inundated with day visitors. Don’t miss the market, with all its colors and excitement as local vendors sell their wares of the day. The variety of tropical produce is a must see, along with the opportunity to drink from a fresh coconut. Visit the Carenage to gaze at Horseshoe Harbor and visit a variety of local restaurants for culinary delights like locally produced rotis.
