Legal sports betting in the US has come a long way since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned by the US Supreme Court in 2018. It is now legal in more than half of the states in the country. Those states that have approved sports betting include New Jersey, Massachusetts, Iowa, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Maine, Illinois, Connecticut, and Louisiana. The other states have not yet approved sports betting legislation. It is not clear when sports betting will be legalized in these states, but more states will likely follow soon.
Pennsylvania passed a bill allowing sports betting at licensed casinos in September of last year. The law allows for up to eight online sportsbooks. The law also permits racetracks to team up with a single online operator. The law also allows for up to four mobile sportsbooks. The law states that all forms of betting will be legal on January 1, 2023.

The state also permits single-game wagering, or “prop bets,” which are similar to fantasy sports. You can place bets on Super Bowl props, other events during a season, and players’ performances during a game. Those bets are illegal in high school sports, though.
The state of Nevada is launching mobile sports betting soon. This type of wagering is legal in Nevada. You will have to register in person at a casino to make a bet, though. You cannot place an online bet from a mobile device, unless you have a license from a casino. The state is also expected to launch its mobile sportsbook apps.
Ohio lawmakers passed a bill allowing online sports betting late in 2021. The bill also called for lottery kiosks to be converted to accommodate limited sports betting. The bill passed the legislature and is now in the governor’s hands. The bill has not yet been signed into law, but it is expected to be approved soon. The state’s governor has been a strong supporter of legalizing online sports betting.
New York has a legal sports betting market that is already generating more tax revenue than any other state. In the first month of operations, New Yorkers have placed more wagers on sports than the other states combined. Those bets have generated more than $70 million in revenue for the state. The state launched its first retail sportsbook in March of 2020, and will soon begin offering mobile sports betting applications.
