The real reason old school sales keep going, even online!
Many people foolishly believe that because they are using the “Internet”, you no longer have to “sell”, that the Internet “does it all for you.”
Could not be farther from the truth.
Internet is just another means of sale, like direct
mail … show ads … postcards … whatever.
This story shows you what the sale is really about. I
Hope you enjoy it and find a way to use it sometime in your
own business.
For over 30 years, an old school salesman, a good old man
country boy – traveled 4 southern states on his
station
wagon with his bird dog, selling appliances to a long list
from the distributors he had established over the years.
The wholesale company I worked for thought many times how
they wanted to get rid of him for his
heterodox
way of selling, not to mention how he looked and spoke.
However, despite his misunderstood methods, he was always in the
top 10% in sales and won many business trips and awards.
On business trips and outings with distributors and manufacturers
he often got drunk and told cheesy stories and
jokes, all the time dressed in his wrinkled and ragged
clothes … again, very unorthodox and rude compared to
the luxury image that the company wanted to present.
Regardless of his methods, the old peasant was so
successful in what it did, the company could not afford to

and mustard stains on it (he lost his order forms).
One week our prominent salesperson was on a business trip to
plant of a
large refrigerator manufacturer for the presentation of a
new technical innovation.
The innovation was for “Frost Free” refrigerators that use a
new
insulating product called Acrylic Barrel Styrene (ABS).
Everywhere you looked, there were these three
letters “ABS” on posters, banners and brochures, everywhere …
all over the place.
At the opening of the early days meeting, with hundreds of
sales representatives present, the marketing executive of the
maker
stood up and in an attempt to make a dramatic announcement
upon
this innovative new technology, and asked the group if
anyone in the
the audience could tell you what ABS stood for.
Our low country boy wrinkled in the back of the room
He jumped out of his chair swinging his arms back and forth.
The executive couldn’t help but notice and called him:
“Yes sir, the man in the chair in the
back. “
Without hesitation as he stood on his chair with his arms
high in the air, he screamed his
respond to the heavens above,
“YOU WILL ALWAYS BE SELLING”.
Remember, if you want extraordinary results … you must
use extraordinary (and unconventional) means to achieve them.
Because the last time I checked … being average … no …
pay … a lot!
Now go sell something
