Possible side effects of slimming tea

Slimming tea is an herbal product that includes approximately 25% tea. Perhaps manufacturers and marketers are trying to latch on to the benefits of other pure teas by creating a drink that is said to promote weight loss.

However, these herbal concoctions are full of laxatives. There is a time in everyone’s life when a laxative may be warranted. Using for weight loss is not one of those times. Among the possible side effects of the use or abuse of these elaborated beverages are:

  • Diarrhea
  • stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • vomiting
  • Fainting
  • chronic constipation
  • Dehydration
  • Gastrointestinal tract problems
  • And possibly death from prolonged abuse by those suffering from anorexia or bulimia.
  • These side effects may not manifest with occasional or first use. However, for some who have “touchy” systems, diarrhea and stomach cramps can occur after the first cup. It should be noted that there are times when the product is useful, especially if one suffers from constipation. However, it should also be noted that prolonged use of laxatives in any form will cause the body to become dependent on them to stimulate bodily functions. The end result can be that the very product one uses to relieve constipation can create an endless cycle of dependency and need.

It goes without saying that pregnant women should not use the products during the nine months of pregnancy as it could have disastrous results.

Nausea and vomiting generally follow more than occasional use. Fainting and dehydration go hand in hand. Often these side effects follow repeated daily use. While the death is not likely to be attributed to drinking a laxative-laden product, it is understandable that prolonged use followed by vomiting, dehydration, and fainting could eventually lead to death.

Of particular interest, many people who suffer from anorexia nervosa and those who experience bulimia are more likely to suffer the dire consequences of taking or drinking these slimming products on a daily basis. Psychological dependence can lead to physical dependence and death. While no one is suggesting that either product is directly responsible for the death, abuse of any weight loss product by someone with a weight-related illness should be a consideration.

Perhaps, there is a place for these products in the cupboard, especially for those times when a laxative is needed. However, before using these products as a weight loss tool, one must be fully aware of the consequences that can result from regular use or abuse.
