Oral Candidiasis Treatment: Ease the Pain of Eating

Oral thrush can literally be a sore mouth and if left untreated it can lead to serious problems. Eating can be very unpleasant or downright painful if you don’t take into account what is irritating the inflamed areas of your mouth. This article will share some tips on how you can decrease pain.

Basically, thrush is a yeast-like fungus that has grown and caused an infection in the mouth. Known in the medical world as candida albicans, it lives in the skin and is kept at bay by your immune system and other beneficial bacteria. Oral thrush can spread to the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils, back of the throat, and even the esophagus. If left untreated, it can also reach the stomach and lungs, which can lead to mouth ulcers and bad breath.

The symptoms of thrush usually manifest as white lesions or patches on the tongue or on the inside of the cheeks, and even on the roof of the mouth. They can be quite painful and even bleed if you scratch them. Because of this, eating can really become a terrible experience, so here are some recommendations to keep in mind:

Drink plenty of fluids, as this will help in case of dehydration. Drink fluids that help fight fungal overgrowth, such as milk drinks that contain vitamins and minerals.

Eat cultured dairy products like yogurt. Yogurt can help prevent bacterial overgrowth because it contains zinc, which helps the immune system retain vitamin C. Vitamin C helps fight infection.

Soups are also beneficial as they are easy to eat and contain the necessary vitamins and minerals that help fight infection. Chicken soups and seafood soups can also relieve pain when swallowing. Be sure to try them too.
