Hybrid cars: much more than a concept

Hybrid cars are no longer on display as concept models at auto shows and are definitely no longer confined to test labs. These vehicles are already on the roads and are proving to be quite a refreshing change.

Hybrid cars represent the idea behind reducing emissions, concentrating on alternative energy sources and increasing fuel efficiency in vehicles. The most common hybrids these days usually house two types of engines; a gasoline internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors. In addition, these vehicles also house regenerative braking systems that convert the kinetic energy produced by braking into electrical energy that is used to power the vehicle and on-board electronics.

However, the term Hybrid Vehicle represents any type of vehicle that is powered by two or more different sources.

It is a fact that hybrid cars are up to 40% more fuel efficient than normal vehicles and also produce 60% less emissions. If you buy a hybrid vehicle, you are not only doing good for your pocket but also for the environment. The US government recently announced additional incentives and tax benefits for hybrid car owners to popularize the concept.

Hybrid cars rely on two completely different types of engines that complement each other to automatically regulate the vehicle’s fuel consumption and power based on its speed. The electric motor runs when the vehicle is traveling at lower speeds or is stationary, for example in traffic jams, while the petrol engine kicks in when speeds exceed 40 mph to provide the extra power needed. The internal combustion engine runs on gasoline, and while it’s running, the electric motor and other electricity storage equipment are charged up and ready to take over when you slow down.

Another feature of these vehicles that allows them to save fuel is the hibernation mode in which the vehicle uses minimal amounts of electrical energy while it is stopped.

Hybrid cars, also called HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles), are much better than electric vehicles in terms of performance at higher speeds and power output. Plus, two separate engines mean that even if one engine develops a snag, there’s always another engine to keep you from getting stranded.

Hybrid vehicles are sure to become an established segment in the years to come as there is a crisis to save the environment from pollution and natural resources from overexploitation.

Although hybrid cars do wonders for the environment and are also fuel efficient, they are not an easy purchase. These vehicles cost a good 40% more than the average car in the same segment.

These cars also require a lot of maintenance. Two engines means more parts that may need service and repair in due course. A lot of complex machinery is also used in these cars. If a replacement part is needed for such a vehicle, it costs almost twice as much as a normal auto part.

Although manufacturers may convince you that these vehicles come with a 30,000-mile warranty, this warranty does not necessarily cover parts replacement.

There is no doubt that with improvements in technology, modern hybrid vehicles will continue to evolve. There could be a case where hybrid vehicles take over other segments in the car market due to the high demand for fuel-efficient and eco-friendly vehicles. Continuous improvements in technology will also reduce costs. All we have to do is wait and watch.
