Feeling very rushed and not knowing how to get out of this, Fred is relieved to hear a knock on the door. He opens the door to find his good old friend Harry returned from abroad. Thank goodness he thinks, “This will take me out of the spotlight!”
Harry walks in and greets everyone. “Enid,” he says, “Happy birthday. He brought you a little present, he’s small, but I hope you like him.”
At this point, Fred realizes there is no way out of the situation and comes clean, admits to forgetting Enid’s birthday and apologizes profusely.
Conclusion: Five years later, Fred and Enid are happily married. Fred has never dared to forget another of Sheila’s birthdays and always remembers her wedding anniversary too!
