Cable or satellite TV?

If you’re considering in-home entertainment, should you go for cable TV or should you consider a satellite system? Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The cost does not seem to be an advantage in any way. But where you live could be the determining factor in which path you take. So let’s take a quick look at these two systems to determine which one is best for you. Cable TV is probably the more convenient of the two. You don’t have to worry about installing a satellite dish and if something went wrong with the equipment, you just have to ask the telephone cable company to rectify it. Satellite companies are starting to fill this gap by providing more installation and repair services. So over time this can become a moot point.

Cable television also does not have the problems associated with atmospheric conditions. For example, if it gets very cloudy outside or starts to snow heavily, your satellite TV may lose reception partially or completely. On the other hand, if the cable TV installation backbone in your neighborhood is quite old, cable TV reception may be poor some or all of the time. This is the situation I find we are in. The ground wiring in our neighborhood is about 30 years old and has some issues. The cost of fixing it by the cable company is too high for them to do anything about it. They would rather offer a refund if someone complains.

On the other hand, satellite television can offer you more channel choices. Satellite TV is constantly updating its selection of services to stay competitive in the market. But once again, cable television has taken notice of this trend and is constantly improving its channel selection as well. I have used both types of systems and have enjoyed them for some time. I think there’s one thing about satellite TV that just doesn’t interest me. Your satellite can normally only accommodate two receivers at a time. This means you have limited flexibility as to where you receive TV within your home. In my situation, we have one TV in our main living room and one in our bedroom. Now I would also like to be able to record TV on my computer. With the cable I was able to do that easily and efficiently. Satellite TV, I’ve never been able to get it to work properly.

So in my opinion, even though our cable doesn’t have as good reception as satellite, it does offer the flexibility to hook up my computer and record it for viewing at my convenience. So which do you think is better for your situation, cable TV or satellite TV?
